The Perfect Closet: Dream or Reality?

A closet is often an afterthought when people think about a home.

There’s a reason houses are described as 4 bedrooms and 3 baths instead of 4 bedrooms and 5 closets. It’s just assumed that rooms will come with closets and houses will come with storage. But having a closet and having the right closet are two very different things. A closet that is organized and fits all of your clothing and accessories (and your significant others things as well!) can make your life so much easier. Getting up in the morning and picking out clothes for work becomes a breeze. Separating your professional attire and your gym clothes is a snap. The right closet does the work for you.

Now, when you think of your dream closet, you think of a walk in with all of your shoes and handbags on display or your nice suits all hung up in a beautifully built mahogany shelving unit. You also see dollar signs everywhere. But the right closet doesn’t have to break the bank or take up an entire room. A recessed closet in a bedroom can still meet all of your needs. Shelving units can hold extra pillows, blankets, and bedding, built in shoe racks can display your collection, and cubbies with hanging bars can hold all of your hanging attire. These closets are especially useful in a kid’s room, when you can also store toys and books behind sliding doors.

But, if you’ve been saving up for your dream closet and have the perfect space to build it, the right design can make or break the space. Consider having two separate units on each wall, one for you and one for your significant other. Make sure you have plenty of space to hang things, but don’t neglect storage for your shoes, bags, and other miscellaneous items. Also, adding a mirror and a chandelier can really round out the design. The right lighting can ensure that when you accidentally pair a black suit with navy blue socks, that look never sees the outside of your closet.

Another design element that can add function and ease to your life is a dressing table in the center of the room. Not only will this table break up the large open space in the center of the room, it gives you a great space to fold laundry and will help you keep your closet organized and clean.
