Behind the Design: Preserving Character, Creating Space – with Dave Vogt at Case

One of the things I enjoy most about remodeling is helping homeowners preserve the features they love while making their homes work better for the way they live today.

This Washington, DC row house kitchen was a perfect example. The homeowners appreciated the traditional character of their home and were especially attached to the original porcelain sink, which had served the kitchen for decades. At the same time, they wanted the space to feel more connected to the rest of the main floor and better suited for gathering with family and friends.

To achieve that goal, we removed the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, creating a more open and functional layout. Opening the floor plan allowed us to expand the kitchen and give the original porcelain sink a place of honor beneath the rear window. After reglazing the sink, it became a beautiful focal point once again—now overlooking the deck and backyard.

One of the most rewarding outcomes of the project is how natural light now flows through the home. Sunlight from the rear of the house extends into the dining room, making both spaces feel brighter, more open, and more welcoming.

The result is a kitchen that respects the home’s history while supporting the way the homeowners live today.

Sometimes the most impactful changes aren’t about adding square footage—they’re about rethinking how a space works. Scroll through the photos below to see how this classic DC row house kitchen evolved into a brighter, more connected space while preserving the character that made it special.
