As a designer, folks always give me a hard time when I’m invited into their homes.
Not because they want “free” design advice—that’s a given, and I generally don’t mind sharing—but more often than not, they ask me the same question:
“Are you judging?”
Judging their home. Their sense of style. Their design choices. All of the above.
My typical response is “no,” which, for the most part, is generally true.
However… there is one space I always get excited to see: the powder room.
Perhaps it’s because it’s one of my favorite spaces to design. Or because I genuinely love seeing what people do with them. Powder rooms are one of those rare spaces where you can really lean into a design aesthetic you might not otherwise choose for the rest of your home.
Take birds, for example. I love them on the walls, like we installed here. In real life? Terrified of them.
Or puppies. I love puppies. Typically, not on wallpaper. And I’ll admit, I didn’t initially love this one during the design process—but it grew on me.
Then there’s the complete opposite: a clean, color-drenched space that proves a powder room doesn’t need pattern to make a statement.
That’s what I love about powder rooms. They’re small, a little unexpected, and the perfect place to have some fun with design.
