Bigger Does Not Always Mean Better

When it comes to kitchen space, storage, light and aisle width are three of the most important design details to consider.

However, with smaller condo kitchens you might not have the space to add every element you want. By being creative and efficient, you can solve many of the issues that arise from a smaller kitchen—you can make what might appear a small space feel and look much bigger!

Open Up the Space

Often times the walls of condo or galley kitchens back right up into the living or dining space. To give the kitchen a bigger feel, open it up into the other spaces of the home.

This can mean breaking down the wall and placing a counter top in the middle as the divide. This design accommodates for a blending of the two spaces, useful for a countertop eating option or entertaining.

Or, if you want to maintain a feeling of greater separation, a break in the wall can also do the trick. It, too, provides the light and more open feeling that comes from taking down the wall but still preserves the integrity of a kitchen space.

Add More Light and Redirect the Eye

Seeing as smaller condo kitchens are already hard pressed for wall, counter, and storage space, taking from that to add bigger windows for a more “airy and light” feel is not always an option. As such, create more light by using glass front cabinets. Glass front cabinets will increase the brightness and give the kitchen a feeling of more room.

Open shelving can be used in combination with traditional cabinetry to break up blocks of wall space and provide additional storage to the ceiling without closing in the room. This shelving helps to draw the eye upward, making the kitchen appear more spacious than it is.

Keep the Counters Free

A well-organized kitchen also improves the smaller feeling. Design your kitchen to have as many small appliances off the counter as possible – counter space is precious. You should consider mounting the faucet and paper towel holder to the wall or choosing a microwave that can double as a second oven to keep the counters neat and free for prep.

Pay Attention to Details

The simplest choices can really change the way your kitchen looks and feels. Deciding on matching appliances, minimalist hardware, a clean backsplash, and limited accessories helps give the kitchen a clean, organized feel.
