Finding Space You Didn’t Even Know was There
Bethesda, MD, November 17, 2009 – With today’s growing families, and seemingly shrinking space in the home, using a little creativity can go a long way. Expert designers can offer great ideas for how to leverage space in your home that you may have not even thought about. According to Bill Millholland, Executive Vice President of Case Design/Remodeling, “oftentimes there are rooms in the home that are underutilized or not utilized at all that can become great functioning space. And adding space doesn’t always have to mean a huge expansion of the size of your home.” Bill Millholland shares some ideas for gaining space in your home.
Basements-Basements are often an underutilized or non-utilitzed space in the home. Finishing some or all of the space in the basement is a great way to gain space without expanding the size of your home. “Specialty rooms” are a popular use for basements today including home offices, exercise rooms, playrooms, and home theaters.
Attics-In many homes, the configuration of the attic doesn’t limit it to simply a storage space. Attics can be a great place to expand livable space in your home and can be converted into bedrooms, home offices, and more. Adding dormers to the attic is another great way to gain space as well as add to the aesthetics of the home.
Enclose a screened in porch-Build three walls and you have yourself a great new space. An underutilized screened-in porch can be transformed into additional conditioned space in the home. It’s relatively simple to do and doesn’t require expanding into the surrounding yard.
Re-Designating Existing Space-Converting an extra bedroom into an exercise room or a living room into a playroom may allow for better functioning space. Thinking about rooms in your home that aren’t utilized in the traditional manner and converting that space into something more functional can help make your home better fit your lifestyle.
Adding Space-There is always the option of adding space. This can even be something as simple as building a garage to add more storage space and help de-clutter every area of the house.
According to Bill Millholland, Executive Vice President of Case Design/Remodeling, “Your home should function to best suit the needs of you and your family. A little creativity, and oftentimes simple changes, can go a long way in making your home a great fit for your lifestyle.”

The Master Certified Remodeler designation is the latest certification given by NARI, to exemplify the highest standards of the remodeling industry. Recipients must hold an active Certified Remodeler (CR) designation for at least 10 years and must hold a leadership position within their local NARI chapter or community, in addition to several other requirements.
“The MCR truly represents those who are masters in their craft, who have continued and expanded their education over the last 10 years as well as supported the industry in some capacity for the last 15 years,” says Dan Taddei, education director for NARI. “As of right now, there are 78 Certified Remodelers (CR) who carry the required credentials from NARI to even be considered.”
Case is one of the top candidates to receive the certification because of his reputation as a thought leader in the remodeling industry. He was instrumental in developing NARI’s first Certified Remodeler certification while serving as the chair of the Education and Certification committees in the mid-1980s.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Falls Church, VA - August 3, 2009 – Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., a leading Virginia area home improvement company partnered with HomeStretch a non-profit organization which assists homeless families to become self-sufficient on Saturday, August 1st to rehabilitate 5 kitchens within their transitional housing program.
Case Design/Remodeling provided over 20 experienced lead carpenters to execute all five renovations in one day. “The value in what Case did for us is incalculable. In trying to support over 70 families and having only two maintenance employees with a limited budget, kitchen remodeling is a luxury,” said Christopher Fay, Executive Director of HomeStretch.
“We’re thrilled that an organization such as HomeStretch can use our skilled craftsmen to help improve the lives of families in the Falls Church community”; added Bruce Case, president of Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. “HomeStretch is a well run organization that truly helps families get back on their feet by providing transitional housing and promoting self-sufficiency. They are a great partner in the community.” adds Case.
Christopher Fay of HomeStretch adds, “the skill set needed for replacing the cabinets and countertops and everything else needed for the repairs is beyond our capability. The five kitchens that Case remodeled for us were in desperate need of repairs. When families move out and new families move into the Home Stretch units the homes undergo a lot of wear and tear. It has been a blessing for us to have found Case and they have worked miracles to get these units back in shape. We as well as the families are truly appreciative and look forward to a continued relationship with Case.”
About HomeStretch
Homestretch was founded in 1990 to be part of the continuum of care for helping homeless families rebuild their lives. The continuum had three parts, the first being outreach to those living on the streets and getting them into shelters, the second being subsidized transitional housing, and the third being permanent housing and self-sufficiency. Homestretch has been a leading provider of the second step-subsidized transitional housing and self-sufficiency-and is now the largest provider of transitional housing for homeless families in Fairfax County. Preparing For Your Kitchen Remodel

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bethesda, MD - July 14th, 2009 – Remodeling your kitchen can create feelings of both excitement and overwhelm. Careful planning before embarking on your kitchen remodel can not only save time, money, and frustration down the road but also allow you to enjoy the process every step of the way.
Below are ten considerations the experts at Case recommend you think about before initiating your kitchen remodel.
Do your homework when it comes to finding a reliable remodeler or design firm. Choosing the right company to work with is probably the most important decision you will make. Not only in terms of the end result of the project, but the process that you experience getting there. Some things to consider when choosing a remodeler: Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau or Angie’s List and what are their ratings, how many projects like yours have they completed, do they use their own craftsmen or do they use subcontractors, can they provide you with references of others who have worked with them.
Determine the best type of company for you. When it comes to kitchen remodeling there are many different choices in terms of the type of company to work with. You can choose a kitchen showroom, big box store, general contractor, electrician and plumber, or design/build firm. While any one of them may work for you, it’s important to weigh all of your options and based on your particular needs, go the direction that is best suited to you and your project.
Consider your budget range. Kitchen remodels come in many shapes and sizes and the possibilities are almost endless. It’s important that you think about what budget you are comfortable with and work with options accordingly. This will help allow you to prioritize those things that are most important to you in your remodel.
Determine big picture goals of the project. Will your kitchen be used primarily as a place for the kids to do their homework? Or will it be a room for entertaining guests? Will there be multiple cooks using the kitchen? Determining the goals for the room will help guide many decisions along the way.
Begin thinking about the scope of work. Is your plan to update your kitchen by leaving the floor plan as is? Or are you looking to reconfigure the floor plan within the existing space? Or maybe your plan is to expand into an adjoining room or add new space. There are a lot of options when it comes to scope of work and all kitchen remodels are definitely not equal!
Narrow down the kitchen style. Whether your taste is contemporary, French country, eclectic, retro or something else, determining your overall kitchen style will help to direct the selections process when it comes to cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring and more.
Consider project timelines. A kitchen remodel is a big investment when it comes to time. Find out a realistic timeline for completion from your remodeler so you can coordinate with your personal schedule. Think about vacations and how you might be able to tie those in with your construction schedule.
Think about contingency kitchen accommodations during construction. With most kitchen remodels, you will be without a functioning kitchen for a period of time. Many good remodelers can help you with a makeshift plan that allows you to operate at least partially out of another area in the home.
Browse through magazines, visit showrooms, browse the internet, and attend seminars for product and design ideas. The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to kitchen products and designs. Familiarizing yourself with some of the possibilities to create a starting point can help alleviate overwhelm. Appliances can be a great place to start when making selections. Once those have been selected, everything else can be built around them.
Make note of your needs, wants and priorities. Talk with other family members who will also be using the kitchen and try to reach common needs, wants and priorities amongst the group.
While the idea of remodeling can be stressful, it can also be a lot of fun. The kitchen is truly one of the most important rooms in the home as it is no longer just a place to cook your meals. It’s a great opportunity to show off your personality and create a warm and inviting room that the whole family enjoys spending time in day after day.
