What Designers are Recommending for Today’s Bathrooms
July 20, 2010-Bethesda, MD – According to Bill Millholland, Executive Vice President of Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., “when it comes to home remodeling, bathrooms are one of the most requested projects today”. Whether it’s a cosmetic update, remodeling the entire room within the existing space, or a full custom renovation, homeowner’s are placing a large emphasis on updating the design and functionality of their bathrooms. Below are some of the trends that Bill Millholland and the bath designers at Case Design/Remodeling are recommending when it comes to bathroom remodels.
Add more light: Explore ways to bring in more natural light through windows or skylights. Also be sure to have ambient lights recessed in the ceiling and task lighting over the shower/tub and sink. Place mirrors strategically to amplify the existing light, making your bathroom feel more spacious and airy.
Update your fixtures: Over the years, sinks, showers, and bathtubs have become fancier and more stylish. Shower stalls have become sleek and glass-enclosed, while tubs can be vintage or modern. If you purchase low-water fixtures, they will also lower your water costs and energy bills, by using less hot water.
Think spa: Consider light blues and whites for a calming feeling and put the lights on a dimmer switch. Soothing music can be piped in by installing a sound system. For luxurious spa-like features, plan for a steam room, shower with multiple water jets, or a whirlpool tub.
Use natural materials: Consider ceramic, recycled glass, or stone tiles in the shower or on the floor. Cabinets and floors can be made from bamboo – a sustainable, fast growing grass. Even sink basins can be made of pottery, carved marble, bronze, or stone mosaic.
“There are so many options available when exploring a bathroom remodel and so many details that go into it,” says Millholland. “Be sure you are doing your research to work with a company that can best help you with not only design, product selections, and great craftsmanship, but also someone with a sound process who is very experienced with this type of remodel.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
What’s “in” for bath remodels
May 27th, 2010-Bethesda, MD –According to Bill Millholland, Executive Vice President at metro DC based Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. updating a bathroom can come in many shapes and sizes. No two projects are alike. But there are some common popular elements to today’s bathrooms. Below are the trends that Case is seeing when it comes to bathroom remodels.
Add more light: See if there are ways to bring in more natural light through windows or skylights. Natural light will save on energy costs, and it makes you feel better. Next, turn to artificial light. Be sure to have ambient lights recessed in the ceiling and task lighting over the shower/tub and sink. Place mirrors strategically to amplify the existing light, making your bathroom feel more spacious and airy.
Update your fixtures: Although the look of a toilet hasn’t changed much over the years, sinks, showers, and bathtubs have become fancier and more stylish. Vessel sinks are very popular and come in a wide variety of colors and materials. Shower stalls have become sleek and glass-enclosed, while tubs can be vintage or modern to match the mood of your bathroom. Purchasing low-water fixtures, they will also lower your water costs and energy bills (by using less hot water).
Do a color makeover: Chances are your bathroom was decorated in the colors that were popular when your house was built. Is it pink? Turquoise? Bright yellow? Even a quick and inexpensive repainting job would be an improvement. However, replacing the tile and countertop would really give the place a new look. But choose fairly neutral colors; they age better.
Think spa: Lots of homeowners want their bathrooms to feel like a soothing retreat from the world. Consider light blues and whites for a calming feeling and put the lights on a dimmer switch. Soothing music can be piped in by installing a sound system (one that can stand up to humidity). For luxurious spa-like features, plan for a steam room, shower with multiple water jets, or a whirlpool tub.
Use natural materials: Stay away from acrylic shower surrounds and particle board vanities. Instead, consider ceramic, recycled glass, or stone tiles in the shower or on the floor. Cabinets and floors can be made from bamboo – a sustainable, fast growing grass. Even sink basins can be made of pottery, carved marble, bronze, or stone mosaic.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(New certification rule takes effect in April)
Bethesda, MD-April 14, 2010 – Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. warns that if you’re doing a home renovation project on a house built before 1978, you need to watch out for lead paint on your walls, windows, or doors. Deteriorating lead paint can be hazardous to adults and children who swallow or inhale it, particularly for children under six. Home remodeling activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can disturb existing lead-based paint and create hazardous lead dust and chips.
In 2008, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a rule requiring certification for contractors performing renovation, repair, and painting projects in homes built before 1978. Starting in April 2010, these contractors, including remodelers, painters, and other specialists, must receive training and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.
According to Bruce Case, President of Case Design/Remodeling, “if you are hiring a professional to do work on your pre-1978 home, ask if he or she is trained to perform lead-safe work practices and ask to see a copy of his or her training certificate”. “At Case we have taken significant measures including certification training of key team members and purchasing all necessary materials and equipment in anticipation of the April 22nd start date”, adds Case. “The safety of our clients and our team is of utmost importance to us”.
Before starting work, renovators must also give homeowners an EPA pamphlet explaining the dangers of lead paint. The EPA requirements do not apply to minor maintenance when less than six square feet of lead-based paint is disturbed inside a house or less than 20 square feet outside. However, window replacement is not considered minor maintenance.
If you plan to do your own renovation work on a pre-1978 home, be sure to visit the EPA’s website (www.EPA.gov) to learn about safe lead practices.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Falls Church, VA – March 15, 2010 – Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., a leading Virginia area home improvement company recently partnered again with HomeStretch a non-profit organization which assists homeless families to become self-sufficient, to rehabilitate 5 kitchens within their transitional housing program.
On Saturday, March 13th, Case Design/Remodeling provided over 20 experienced lead carpenters to execute all five renovations in one day. “The value in what Case did for us is incalculable. In trying to support over 70 families and having only two maintenance employees with a limited budget, kitchen remodeling is a luxury,” said Christopher Fay, Executive Director of HomeStretch.
“We’re thrilled to continue to help an organization such as HomeStretch to help improve the lives of families in the Falls Church community”; added Bruce Case, president of Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. “We are always impressed with how well run an organization this is that truly helps families get back on their feet by providing transitional housing and promoting self-sufficiency. We are always excited to join such a great partner in the community.” adds Case.
Christopher Fay of HomeStretch adds, “the skill set needed for replacing the cabinets and countertops and everything else needed for the repairs is beyond our capability. The five kitchens that Case remodeled for us were in desperate need of repairs. When families move out and new families move into the Home Stretch units the homes undergo a lot of wear and tear. It has been a blessing for us to have found Case and they have worked miracles to get these units back in shape. We as well as the families are truly appreciative and look forward to a continued relationship with Case.”
About HomeStretch
Homestretch was founded in 1990 to be part of the continuum of care for helping homeless families rebuild their lives. The continuum had three parts, the first being outreach to those living on the streets and getting them into shelters, the second being subsidized transitional housing, and the third being permanent housing and self-sufficiency. Homestretch has been a leading provider of the second step-subsidized transitional housing and self-sufficiency-and is now the largest provider of transitional housing for homeless families in Fairfax County.
